WHAT TO DO IF A LIQUID SPILLS INTO YOUR LAPTOP?
WHAT TO DO IF A LIQUID SPILLS INTO YOUR LAPTOP?
Liquid spills can be so dangerous and unpredictable, so if this ever happens you don’t need to panic because at the end of this article you will know exactly what do to if this ever happens.
It’s a common habit for most laptop users to rest cups of
coffee and juice or soda cans on the area reserved for the arm rest when
typing. For those who don’t know the arm rest area on the laptop, it’s that
space left on both sides of the laptop touch/mouse pad below the keyboard.
As we all know accidents happen so fast, so anything can
happen and the liquid may spill into the keyboard and goes all the way down to
the motherboard and causes a short circuit.
WHAT TO DO?
1.
First thing is to quickly turn off the laptop
by;
- · Quickly remove the power adaptor.
- Holding down the power button till the laptop goes off.
- Removing the battery instantly if you can.
At this point it won’t be necessary waiting to shut down
windows or iOS normally as it might take long enough for the damage to take
effect on the computer.
Ø
After removing the battery leave the laptop open
and turn it upside down, making sure the keyboard is the one facing down. This
is to make sure all the liquid instead of flowing downwards to the motherboard
it will flow out like in the picture below.
Ø
After 30 minutes get a screw driver and open the
laptop, remove the hard drive and make sure it is ok then take note of any other
internal parts the liquid might have reached.
Ø
If you cannot open the laptop by yourself then
leave it upside down for more minutes, say 45 minutes and later rush it to a
technician to open and dry it instantly.
Ø
If you act so fast on the steps above you may
not need to pay any technician for this, all you have to do is get a small crew
driver, open it and hung the motherboard out in the sun, using a hand hair
drier or placing it at a reasonable height above a hot charcoal stove making
sure not to burn it. Give it enough time to dry thoroughly and then
re-assemble.
Ø
Turn it on but with-out the battery or with only
the adaptor plugged in, why we do this is quickly plug out the adaptor in case
something doesn’t seem right when you try powering on, all you do is quickly
disconnect the adaptor from the motherboard.
Ø
If your keyboard is NON removable get a hair
drier and blow gently over it to make sure all the small liquid droplets
remaining can all dry. If removable, remove it and hung it together with the
motherboard using whichever heat source you can access easily. If you don’t
have a hand drier am sure you have the sun or any other alternative heat
source, all you have to do is be very careful while you do so because a
keyboard is plastic any direct heat might just melt it.
2.
Depending on what type of liquid poured into
your laptop, some keys may fail to function after the whole process is done
though am sure the laptop will be just fine, so depending on the liquid you may
need to replace the keyboard immediately as sticky keys may start pressing
themselves and causing the laptop to misbehave.
All should be
well and you are free to resume work as before without incurring any extra
cost.
If you can access Petro or any spirit that
can evaporate it would be ok to sprinkle a few drops in the keyboard and then
wait to dry.
